The Roles in One Night Ultimate Werewolf

Each player gets a particular role in One Night Ultimate Werewolf (take a look at a previous post about One Night Ultimate vs Ultimate Werewolf Deluxe here). You can be a regular villager, a werewolf, or someone with a special ability. However, many things happen in the single night phase, and you have to kill at least one werewolf in the day – except if you are actually a werewolf, then it is in your best interest to avoid getting discovered.

Inside the box, you can find 16 character cards which feature 12 unique roles. There are also 16 character tokens. In addition, the box also includes a guide book with detailed explanation for each role.

Some of the roles in One Night Ultimate Werewolf vs Daybreak should be quite familiar if you have ever played the classic game previously. One Night Ultimate Werewolf is designed for 3 – 10 players. In each game, there should always be three more cards than the number of participating players, placed at the center.

The roles in One Night Ultimate Werewolf can be divided into two teams, “the village team” and “the werewolf team”. In general, the village team should try to find and kill a werewolf, whereas the werewolf team should try to hide the real werewolves. There are also some ‘weird’ roles with their own mechanics.

The village team:

  • Villager. They don’t have any special ability, but they are obviously not a werewolf. Most players often claim to be villagers.
  • Hunter. When a hunter dies, they may point another player to die as well.
  • Robber. At night, a robber may choose to keep his card or swap their card with another player’s.
  • Troublemaker. At night, a troublemaker may swap the cards between two players without seeing what those cards are.
  • Mason. At night, masons wake up to see who the other masons are.
  • Drunk. Wake up at night to change his card with a new card from the deck, without seeing what the new card is.
  • Seer. Wake up at night to see another player’s card.
  • Insomniac. Wake up at night to see if their card has changed or not.

The werewolf team:

  • Werewolf. At night, werewolves wake up to see their partners. If there is only one werewolf, they may see one center card.
  • Minion. At night, a minion wakes up to see who the werewolves are. They win if all werewolves survive, even if they die themselves.

Weird roles:

  • Tanner. Technically, a tanner is a member of the village, but they hate their job so much that they want to die. In practice, a tanner doesn’t belong to either team. A tanner wins if they get killed.
  • Doppelganger. Wake up before every other role at night, open another player’s card and assume that role without swapping the cards.

How to Play One Night Ultimate Werewolf

Each game should always use 2 werewolves, 1 seer, 1 troublemaker, and 1 robber. Then, for a three player game, add 1 villager; for a four-player game, add two villagers; for a five-player game, add three villagers; and so on. Pick three more cards randomly. Shuffle all the cards that you are going to use, and deal one to each player. Put the remaining cards at the center.

Each player should see their card secretly, then put the card in front of them so that all the other players can access it easily. Now, if you have the free One Night Ultimate Werewolf mobile app, you can use it as a non-player announcer. Otherwise, you need someone to act as the announcer. The announcer is responsible to guide the night phase by telling the special roles to wake up and perform their actions.

After the night phase, the players should discuss to find who the werewolves are. Every player may say anything they want. However, because some roles can change the players’ cards, you can’t know for sure what your current role actually is. At the end of the day phase, the players should vote for someone to kill. The player with the most votes die.

The village team wins if a werewolf is killed, or if there is no werewolf in the game because the werewolves are in the center. On the other hand, the werewolf team wins if there is at least one werewolf in the game and no werewolves are getting killed. Meanwhile, the tanner wins if they get killed.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf Daybreak is actually quite similar to the original. It is also designed for 3 – 10 players. However, it can act as a stand-alone game, or an expansion to the original. By using both One Night Ultimate Werewolf and One Night Ultimate Werewolf Daybreak, you can accommodate a larger number of players into the game.

There are more components in One Night Ultimate Werewolf Daybreak, which include 11 role cards, 11 role tokens, 2 shield tokens, 6 artifact tokens, and a guide book with detailed descriptions of the roles.

  • Paranormal Investigator. At night, may view two players’s cards. However, if they find a werewolf or tanner, they must stop viewing cards and immediately become a werewolf or tanner.
  • Village Idiot. May wake up at night to move every player’s card (except his own) one spot to the left or to the right.
  • Curator. May wake up at night to place an artifact on another player’s card.
  • Apprentice Seer. Wakes up at night to see one of the center cards.
  • Revealer. Wakes up at night to flip open one player’s card. However, if it is a werewolf or tanner, the card must be put back face-down.

The werewolf team:

  • Alpha Wolf. Wakes up twice at night, first to see the other werewolves, and second to change a non-werewolf player into a werewolf.
  • Mystic Wolf. Wakes up twice at night, first to see the other werewolves, and second to see another player’s card.
  • Dream Wolf. Doesn’t wake up at night, so they don’t know who the other werewolves are, but the other werewolves know them.

Suitable Audience

Both One Night Ultimate Werewolf and One Night Ultimate Werewolf Daybreak are recommended for 8 years old and up. Both games are suitable for children and adults. Both games can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, and are excellent party games that are fun for friends and families.

However, if you have never played One Night Ultimate before, the original One Night Ultimate Werewolf would be a better choice. It is relatively easier to understand, and the roles are not too complicated. It is a great introduction for new players.

Meanwhile, One Night Ultimate Werewolf Daybreak is only recommended if you have ever played the original game, and now you want a game with more twists. Indeed, some of the roles are really powerful. This makes the game even more interesting and unpredictable. One Night Ultimate Werewolf Daybreak is also an excellent expansion for the original game.

Both games are fast-paced. The night phase only takes 1 – 2 minutes, and the day phase only goes for 5 minutes. Hence, you will want to play the game multiple times if you have one or two hours to spare with your friends.
